SADE SATI - THE SATURN'S MALEFIC PERIOD

‘Sade Sati’ represents the seven and half years Sani period which is the most dreaded period in the life of a person. This is also known as ‘Elinati Sani’ in Andhra Pradesh. First of all, let us understand why Sade Sati consists of seven and half years’ period. vedic astrology Sade sati Sani The zodiac which is represented by the horoscope of a person consists of 12 signs or rasis. The planet Saturn moves in the zodiac at the rate of 1 sign in two and half (2.5) years period. Thus, Saturn takes a total period of 12 X 2.5 = 30 years to make one complete round in the zodiac.

While considering the horoscope of a person, we give maximum importance to the Ascendant. Ascendant is the point in the horoscope which represents the person’s self, his nature and physical appearance. Next to the Ascendant, importance is given to the planet Moon by Vedic Astrologers. Moon is the fastest of all planets. It moves in the zodiac at about two and quarter days in a sign. Thus, it covers all the 12 signs of the zodiac in approximately 28 days. This is called one lunar month.

Moon represents the mind of the person. Every month, when Moon goes around the zodiac once, it touches all the planets in the horoscope of a person. Thus Moon receives the energies of all planets and pours them into the mind of the person. In this way, the person’s mindset is continuously affected by Moon. Since our actions are motivated by our mind, we can say our life is greatly influenced by Moon. When a person attains 35 years of age, the growth of the physical body (Ascendant) ceases and maturity of the mind (Moon) increases. This is the reason many Vedic Astrologers analyze the horoscope by considering Moon as Ascendant, especially if the person’s age is beyond 35.

Sade Sati represents the movement of Saturn relative to Moon sign. At the time of your birth, the position of Moon in your horoscope is called ‘Moon sign’ or your ‘birth rasi’. Sade Sati starts when transit Saturn comes into the sign which is before your Moon sign and it ends when Saturn comes out of the sign which is after your Moon sign. For example, if your Moon sign is Libra (Thula), the sign before it is Virgo (Kanya) and the sign after it is Scorpio (Vrischik). So, Sade sati period will start for you when transiting Saturn enters Virgo. Sade sati period ends when Saturn comes out of Scorpio. Thus Saturn covers Virgo, Libra and Scorpio – these three signs during Sade sati period. Since 1 sign takes 2.5 years time, the 3 signs will take 3 X 2.5 = 7.5 years. Thus seven and half years period is ascribed to Sade Sati. Since Saturn takes 30 years time to cover the entire zodiac, a person may get Sade Sati for 2 times on an average in his life time. It means if you are in Sade Sati now, you will get it the next time after 30 years from now.

The next question is why 3 signs are included into Sade Sati. We should remember that Saturn is by nature a malefic planet. Wherever he may stay, he will cause harm to that sign. Out of all the positions, transit Saturn is found to be more inimical in 12th, 1st, 2nd, 4th and 8th houses from natal Moon. Please note that the first three positions, i.e. 12th, 1st and 2nd positions are coming under Sade Sati. The 4th position is called artha-ashtama Sani dosha and the 8th position is known as ashtama Sani dosha.
